Partnering with School on Wheels
Written by Donna Martz
IndyAMA is excited to announce we have selected School on Wheels as our Community Relations partner for the 2016-2017 year. School on Wheels, which was founded in 2001, provides one-on-one tutoring and educational advocacy for grade school children impacted by homelessness in Indianapolis.
The vision of School on Wheels is to equip children with the necessary educational tools to achieve success in life and break the cycle of homelessness. As a local community organization, IndyAMA is proud to partner with other organizations and develop outreach efforts with other professional groups to enhance the communities we serve.
School on Wheels has grown over the years to serve more than 350 children at 13 partner sites with the help of nearly 400 volunteer tutors.” School on Wheels offers after-school tutoring, in addition to curriculum-based tutoring in schools through Tutors in Action.
Tutors in Action is an academic intervention program that offers one-on-one tutoring to children experiencing homelessness throughout Indianapolis. School on Wheels also develops hands on activities that align with Indiana state standards for grades k-12. These activities include Tutor Toolkits, Creativity Kits, ISTEP Practice Cards and educational apps on iPads at each location. If you would be interested in tutoring, please check out the volunteer page.
We look forward to giving our members and guests opportunities to learn more and support the School on Wheels. If you’d like to support the organization, Rockstone Pizzeria and Pub in Nora will donate 30% of the sales from all orders placed on Monday, November 28th from 11 a.m to 11 p.m. – be sure to mention the organization when you order!
